When Intimate Partner Violence Comes to Work: Employer Considerations During COVID-19
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health issue, affecting an estimated 1 in 3 women globally. Although intimate partner violence has historically been understood as an issue limited to “the home”, about 44% of professionals report being impacted by IPV in the workplace. Women of Color are among the lowest-paid professionals, and experience disproportionately high rates of IPV, making them uniquely vulnerable to both IPV and employer responses to IPV. About 70% of employers report not having a policy to address IPV in the workplace, often resulting in punitive responses to victims when abuse impacts the workplace. Rates of abuse increase during periods of mandated isolation, and as Americans quarantine across the country, victims are finding themselves balancing their safety, the safety of their children, and professional responsibilities. This workshop will discuss the dynamics of IPV, why Black and Indigenous women and Women of Color are overrepresented among survivors and the implications for their financial and professional security. This workshop will highlight the critical role employers have to intentionally support survivors, resources available, and model IPV policies for the workplace.
